How to paint for beginners: six manageable steps
Try these basics with a simple landscape or a bold shape. They are starting points, rather than a fixed workshop script: your artist can adapt the approach to the theme and help you decide what to do next.
Choose a subject with simple shapes
A horizon, a sunset or one clear silhouette is easier to break down than a busy street scene. Pick two or three main colours and decide which part of the picture you want people to notice first.
Try this: Keep your first subject small enough to finish. A few clear shapes can make a complete painting.
Sketch the main shapes lightly
Mark where the horizon or largest shape will sit. Use a light outline to divide the canvas into areas, without drawing every detail. For a landscape, leave a clear area for the sky and another for the ground or water.
Try this: Step back before painting. It is easier to move a light outline than a finished detail.
Paint the background first
Use a larger brush for broad areas such as the sky. Spread the paint in an even layer and follow the direction of the shape. Leave small features until later so you can concentrate on covering the canvas.
Try this: Use the larger brush for larger spaces. A tiny brush makes a sky take much longer.
Build the larger shapes and colours
Add the main subject over the background once the base is ready. Try a small amount of a second colour on your palette before committing it to the canvas. Add white gradually if you want a lighter version.
Try this: Rinse and blot the brush between colours so the previous colour does not muddy the next one.
Add contrast and a few details
Look for one light area and one darker area to give the picture depth. Switch to a smaller brush for edges or highlights. For a sunset landscape, a darker tree or shoreline can stand out against a lighter sky.
Try this: Let the lower layer dry before adding a crisp shape on top. Ask your artist if you are unsure.
Step back, make one adjustment and finish
Look at the whole canvas from a little farther away. Choose one thing to tidy, such as an edge or a highlight, instead of repainting everything. Your painting can have its own colours and character, even when you start from the same theme as everyone else.
Try this: Ask how to carry the canvas home while the surface finishes drying.

What if the painting is not going to plan?
You do not need to solve every problem before booking. These are useful things to try, and good questions to ask your artist during the session.
The colours look muddy
Clean the brush, try a fresh mix on the palette and give the wet area a moment before adding more paint.
The shape looks uneven
Check the outline from a distance. Adjust the largest edge first; leave small details until the shape feels right.
I do not know what to do next
Ask for one next step: a background colour, a larger shape or a highlight. You can make progress without planning the whole canvas.
